-7/8 - x = -7/12
first move -7/8 to the right side of the equation
to do this add 7/8 to both sides like this
-7/8 + 7/8 - x = -7/12 + 7/8
-x = -7/12 + 7/8
now to add fractions they must have a common denominator
So we have to find the LCD for the fractions
The LCD for 12 and 8 is 24
-7/12 becomes -14/24
and
7/8 becomes 21/24
so now we have
-x = -14/24 + 21/24
-x = 7/24
x = - 7/24
Check the answer:
-7/8 - x = -7/12
-7/8 - (-7/24) = -7/12
-7/8 + 7/24 = -7/12
-21/24 + 7/24 = -7/12
-14/24 = -7/12
-7/12 = -7/12
