One number is 3 less than another number
Two numbers are x and x - 3
x(x - 3) = 40
x^2 - 3x - 40 = 0
(x + 5)(x - 8) = 0
x + 5 = 0
x = -5
x - 8 = 0
x = 8
You can have:-
Either
-5 and -8
or 5 and 8
