the number of sides = 360 / x.

for example, assume you have an octagon (8 sided figure).

the external angle would be 360 / 8 = 45.

therefore, the number of sides would be 360 / 45.

this works for any polygon.

for example:

a pentagon has an internal angle of 108 degrees.

the external angle is the supplement of that, which is equal to 72 degrees.

360 / 72 = 5, which is the number of sides of the pentagon.
