Call their ages now, s and t. Then we write
s = t + 37
In ten years,
s + 10 = 2(t + 10)
Now substitute the first equation into the second and get
t+37 + 10 = 2(t + 10)
t + 47 = 2t + 20
Now subtract t and subtract 20 and get
47 = t + 20
t = 27 years old (Tom)
