: Hello- I have recently returned to school and need help. It seems no one I know can remember Algebra to help me and I am having issues with the word problems, frankly they are starting to annoy me. My problem is as follows:I need to compare the price of Glad wrap to Press'n Seal. A roll of Glad wrap sells for $2.99. A roll of Press'n Seal sells for $3.79 or 5 cents a square foot. Press n'Seal sells for 10/3 times as much per square foot as Glad Wrap. What is the price of Glad wrap per square foot? I know I need to find the price of Glad per sq. ft. I have tried all the examples shown in chapter 5 and I guess I'm not sure what goes where anymore. I would appreciate ANY help and BIG Thank you ahead of time. Also any suggestions on learning to decipher word problems?? I have along ways to go. This question is from textbook Practical Business Math Procedures
You can put this solution on YOUR website! compare the price of Glad wrap to Press'n Seal. A roll of Glad wrap sells for $2.99. A roll of Press'n Seal sells for $3.79 or 5 cents a square foot. Press n'Seal sells for 10/3 times as much per square foot as Glad Wrap. What is the price of Glad wrap per square foot?
--------------
Word problems: Read carefully and symbolize the information as you
read so you won't have to read the whole problem more than once or
twice.
-------------
Your Problem:
Glad = 299 cents per roll
---------
Press = 379 cents per roll
Press price = 5 cents per sq. ft.
Press has 379/5 = 75.8 sq ft in a roll
------------
Press price = (10/3)Glad price
Substitute:
5 cents = (10/3)Glad price
Multiply both sides by (3/10) to get:
(3/10)5 = Glad price
Glad price = 3/2 cents per square ft.
-----------------
You probably see that some of the information I put down
was useless. You don't know till you get to the answer.
