Make nickels = x
and quarters = y
x + y = 33........(1)
5x + 25y = 445....(2)
Multiply Eq(1) by 25
25x + 25y = 825....(1)
5x + 25y = 445.....(2)
Subtract Eq(2) from Eq(1)
20x = 380
x = 19
Substitute x = 19 into Eq(1)
x + y = 33.....(1)
19 + y = 33
y = 33 - 19
y = 14
Kevin and Randy have 19 nickels
and 14 quarters.
