In terms of y how old was the mother 4 years ago
y + 20 - 4
y + 16
and four years ago the ratio of their ages was 7:3

cross multiply
7(y-4) = 3(y + 16)
7y - 28 = 3y + 48
7y - 3y = 48 + 28
4y = 76
y = 76/4
