Question 1023735: 35. Find the maximum height of a golf ball hit with a vertical velocity of 30 meters per second, if the height of the ball is given by:
h(t) =−9.8t^2 2 +30t
Where h(t) is in meters, and t is in seconds
a) Find the maximum height obtained in the first 1.25 seconds of flight.
b) Find the maximum height obtained between the 1st second and the 2nd second.

let y = 75.
let x = the number of years after 1900.

i used x instead of t because it's clearer in type. sometimes the t looks more like a plus sign which sometimes confuses people.

no problem.

just change x to t when you translate the solution.

the equation is 75 = 55 + .2 * x.

subtract 55 from both sides of the equation to get 20 = .2 * x.

divide both sides of the equation by .2 to get 100 = x.

when x = 0, the year is 1900.
when x = 100, theyear is 1900 + 100 = 2000.

the life expectancy will be 75 years of age in the year 2000.

lets see if that makes sense.

in 1900, the life expectancy is 55.
the year 2000 is 2000 - 1900 = 100 years from there.
the life expectancy increases .2 years for each additional year.
the life expectancy has therefore increased .2 * 100 = 20 years since 1900.
55 + 20 = 75.
looks good.

replace x with t and your equation is 75 = 55 + .2 * t.
