Question 1023406: How do I go about solving the following?
1/2x+y=7/6, x+2y=4.5
The answer is no solution and inconsistent system but I need to see the breakdown. Answer by FrankM(1040) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! 1/2x+y=7/6
Multiply both sides by 6 to get rid of fractions.
3x+6y=7
x+2y=4.5
Multiply both sides by 2 to get rid of fractions.
2x+4y=9
Notice that the coefficients of the second equations x and y are both 2/3 the first equation. If you multiply by 1.5 you get
3x+6y=13.5
But, first equation is
3x+6y=7
These 2 lines are parallel. No solution.
