Let A and B be the two friends that collected the money,let x be the total money.
from your question,
A=x/3
and
B=x-20
then the situation demand that the ammount A received should be equal to ammount B recieved
Hence,
A=B
therefore, x/3=x-20
mutiply out,
x=3x-60
3x-x-60=0
2x-60=0---->this is the required equation.
b.from 2x-60=0,
2x=60
x=30
the total money is 30
so A=x/3
A=30/3
A=10 also
B=x-20
B=30-20
B=10
so each recieved 10
