You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two numbers, a & b
write an equation for each statement
:
One number is 5 more than another.
a - b = 5
a = (b+5)
The difference between their squares is 95.
a^2 - b^2 = 95
Replace a with (b+5)
(b+5)^2 - b^2 = 95
FOIL (b+5)(b+5)
b^2 + 5b + 5b + 25 - b^2 = 95
Combine like terms
10b + 25 = 95
10b = 95 - 25
10b = 70
b = 70/10
b = 7
:
I'll let you find a, check your solution in both statements
