Make Joe's age = 'x'
Chloe's age = x + 12
The sum of their ages is 53
x + (x + 12) = 53
x + x + 12 = 53
2x = 53 - 12
2x = 41
x = 20 1/2
Joe = 20 1/2 years old
Chloe = 32 1/2 years old
