You can put this solution on YOUR website! write a word problem involving finding two real numbers that could be solved with the equation x(9-x)=14.
I am at a total lose here, I have no idea how to start a word problem with this.
------
Notice that x + (9-x) = 9
So you have the product of x and 9-x is 14
------
Problem:
The sum of the wts. of my dog and yours is 9.
The product of their wts. is 14.
Find the wt of the two dogs.
----
m + y = 9
xy = 14
------
Substitute for "y" and solve for "x"::
x(9-x) = 14
9x - x^2 = 14
----
x^2 - 9x + 14 = 0
------
(x-2)(x-7) = 0
x = 2 or x = 7
----
One of the dogs weighs 2 lbs; the other weighs 7 lbs
