Question 1018456: Personal bankruptcy filings nationwide have increased. New filings this year were 1,123,833, compared to filings of 873,273 in the past year. How much of a percent increase was there in the new year? Round to the nearest hundredth percent.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! (1,123,833-873,273)/873,273 = increase from past year. Multiply times 100 to get the percentage.
NOTE: Why do we multiply the answer times 100? Because percent means one part in a hundred, it comes from the Latin "per centum" which means per one hundred.
So, when you see 10% it means 10 out of every 100. If you want 10% of 1 you have to divide by 100 or, as in this case, the other way around.
