f(x)=1 for -1 < x < 1

f(x) = 1 is a horizontal line going thru (0,1). It goes from (-1,1) to (1,1), not counting the endpoints.
f(x) - 1 is the same line only dropped down one point...thus going from (-1,0) to (1,0), not including endpoints...
