I'm not sure what is meant by "benchmarks". I'm guessing some sort of Common Core math?
The square root of 42 is 6.48
You could look at the square of 6 (36) and the square of 7 (49) and guess that it's pretty close to halfway between.

3 sqrt 50 = 21.21
Again, you could estimate that the square root of 50 is going to be just over 7 (since 7*7 = 49). Then multiply that by 3. Your estimate would be "just over 21." The "benchmark" would be 7 squared, I guess.
