: can you please help me figure out how to solve this problem? Pablo is driving 40 miles per hour.after he has driven 30 miles, his brother ricardo starts driving in the same direction. at what rate must ricardo drive to catch up with pablo in 5 hours? This question is from textbook algebra 1
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Pablo has a 30 mi head start ... if Ricardo is going to catch him in 5 hr, he has to make up 30/5 or 6 mi/hr
so Ricardo must go 6 mph faster or 40+6=46 mph
using equations, they meet when they have traveled the same distance ... so (40*5)+30=x*5 ... 230=5x ... 46=x
