Make pens = x
pencils = y
6x + y = 9........(1)
4x + 2y = 8.......(2)
Multiply (1) by 2
12x + 2y = 18.....(1)
4x + 2y = 8.......(2)
Subtract (2) from (1)
8x = 10
x = 10/8
x = $1.25
Substitute x = 1.25 into (2)
4x + 2y = 8.......(2)
4(1.25) + 2y = 8
5 + 2y = 8
2y = 8 - 5
2y = 3
y = $1.5
Pen cost $1.25
Pencils cost $1.50
