A box with a square base and no top is to be made from a square piece of carboard by cutting 2 in. squares from each corner and folding up the sides. The box is to hold 1682 in^3. How big a piece of cardboard is needed?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
You need to find the length, width, and
height of thr box
The height is going to be +2+ in because
that's what you get when you fold up the
sides to make the box
Let +x+ = the length
of the sides of the cardboard
------------------------------------
To find the width of the box,
you must subtract +2+ in
from both sides, so
Width of box = +x+-+4+ in
The same is true for
the length of the box
Length of box = +x+-+4+ in
-------------------
I will say that:
+y+=+x+-+4+
Now I can say:
+1682+=+2y%5E2+
+y%5E2+=+841+
+y+=+29+
----------------
+y+=+x+-+4+
+29+=+x+-+4+
+x+=+33+
The cardboard is 33" x 33"
check:
+1682+=+2%2A29%2A29+
+1682+=+1682+
OK
