Question 1016579: I really need your help in solving this problem. I appreciate your time and efforts. Have a terrific day :) Here is the question?
On a exam, with a mean of M= 82, you obtain a score, of X = 86.
A. Would you prefer a standard deviation of s=2 or s=10? (Hint: Sketch each distribution and find the location of your score.)
B. If your score x =78, would you prefer s= 2 or s= 10? Explain your answer.
Thank you in advance, for helping me out.
Yours,
Jay

You can put this solution on YOUR website! A tighter distribution (smaller standard deviation) means the scores are more closely distributed about the mean.
If you're higher than the mean, you want a smaller deviation because that would mean you're closer to the highest score, if not the highest score.
Equivalently, if you're lower than the mean, you would be closest to the lowest score, if not the lowest.
So if your grade is below the mean, you want a larger standard deviation because that will move you further from the lowest score.
