Call their ages NOW, c and h. Then we have
c = h - 48 and eight years ago
h - 8 = 4(c - 8)
Now substitute the first into the second and get
h - 8 = 4(h - 48 - 8)
h - 8 = 4(h - 56)
h - 8 = 4h - 224
3h = 216
h = 72
and thus
c = 72 - 48 = 24 years old
