Question 1016256: Michelle has $1.90 in fines and buckles. If she has 4 fewer nickles than 5 times the number of dimes, how many dimes does she have?
I am really stuck on this problem. Any help would be great. I tried solving with my equations as
.10d + .05n = 1.90
5d=n-4
But I keep getting decimal answers and the teacher said there wouldn't be any. Please and thank you if you can help me find out what d is !?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
let d=dimes
then nickels are 5d-4
.10d+.05(5d-4)=1.90
.10d+.25d-.20=1.90
.35d=2.10
d=6
n=26
That is 60 cents +130 cents, or $1.90
The 4 fewer nickels than 5 times the numbers of dimes is the other way around, 5d-4. That was what needed to be changed.

Michelle has $1.90 in dimes and nickels. If she has 4 fewer nickles than 5 times the number of dimes, how many dimes does she have?
I am really stuck on this problem. Any help would be great. I tried solving with my equations as
.10d + .05n = 1.90
5d=n-4 *********** not right. It's 5d = n+4
=================
n = 5d - 4
10d + 5n = 190
---
10d + 5*(5d-4) = 190
35d - 20 = 190
35d = 210
d = 6
---
n = 26
