Find the length of the side of each square
:
let x = the side of the 2nd square
then
(2x+3) = the side of the 1st square
:
(2x+3)^2 = 105
FOIL
4x^2 + 6x + 6x + 9 = 105
4x^2 + 12x + 9 - 105 = 0
4x^2 + 12x - 96 = 0
simplify, divide by 4
x^2 + 3x - 24 = 0
Using the quadratic formula, I got a positive solution of:
x = 3.623cm, the side of the 2nd square

then side of the 1st square
2(3.623) + 3 = 10.246 cm
