Question 1013898: the train from limerick to cork makes only a few stops. after one-eighth of the journey it stops to let off some passengers. it then travels 30km and stops again, bringing it to the halfway point. one more stop is made to divide the rest of the journey in two.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +d+ = the length of the trip in km
After 1st stop, the train has gone
+d%2F8+ km
After the 2nd stop, the train has gone
+d%2F8+%2B+30+ km
This is the half-way point, so I can say
+d%2F8+%2B+30+=+d%2F2+
Multiply both sides by +8+
+d+%2B+30%2A8+=+4d+
+3d+=+240+
+d+=+80+
The trips 80 km long
