Sounds like two separate questions...the second one can be answered by knowing that the 36 inches is the diagonal length of a square...we divide it by sqrt(2) and get
36 / 1.414 = 25.46 inches
If the height was 20 inches, then we use Pythagoras to find the length,x...
x^2 + 20^2 = 36^2
x^2 + 400 = 1296
x^2 = 896
x = 29.93 inches
