Call the number of nickels and dimes she has, n and d. Then we have
n + d = 27 and the value equation is
5n + 10d = 175 (use cents)
Now multiply the top one by 5 and subtract from the second...we get...
5n + 10d = 175
-(5n + 5d = 135)

5d = 40
d = 8 dimes
n = 19 nickels
