Question 1009525: Please help me solve and understand how to solve this problem.
To get a drivers license, an applicant must pass a written test and a driving test. Past records show that 80% of the applicants pass the written test and 60% of those who have passed the written test pass the driving test. Based on there figures, how many applicants in a random group of 1,000 applicants would you expect to get driver's licenses?
Thank you.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Percentages are fractions in disguise.
%2280%25%22 means 80 out of 100 or 80%2F100 .

Past records indicate that
%2280%25%22=80%2F100 of the applicants pass the written test.
So, out of 1000 applicants you would expect that
1000%2A%2880%2F100%29=1000%2A80%2F100=800 would pass the written test.

Past records also indicate that of those who have passed the written test,
%2260%25%22=60%2F100 pass the driving test.
So, if 8000 out of the 1000 applicants have passed the written test,
you would expect that
800%2A%2860%2F100%29=800%2A60%2F100=highlight%28480%29 would pass the driving test.
