Question 10085: I keep getting the wrong answer for this. I don't know which part of my equation is wrong. The book says that the answer is: 358 miles
It says solve (WORD PROBLEM)
"a car rental company charges $39.95 per day for a compact car plus 15 cents per mile over 100 miles driven per day. If a customer's bill for 2 days' use is $103.60 before taxes, find how many miles to the nearest whole mile were driven."
I know what to do once the problem is set up. I just can't seem to set it up correctly. I thought it translated to:
(2) 39.95 + .15= 103.60
butI know that it's not right. Can anyone help? Please.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Right, fairly simple to set up:
$39.95 per day plus $0.15 per mile over 100 miles (customer allowed 100 miles per day of hire)
Let x = number of miles CHARGED for...
so, for 2 days we have (39.95*2) + 0.15y = 103.60, whci simplifies as follows:
79.90 + 0.15y = 103.60
0.15y = 23.70
y = 158 miles charged for.
Since customer had car 2 days, he had 200 miles free, so he must have travelled 358 miles.
