7(r + 3) + 2(r - 2)
First you must distribute or multiply the 7...7(r+3) to get 7r+21. 7*r=7r,7*3=21 read: 7 times r and 7 times 3.
Second you distribute the 2....2(r-2) to get 2r-4. 2*r=2r, 2*-2=-4
So at this point you have 7r+21+2r-4.
You must now add and subtract like-terms.
The like terms in the problem right now are, 7r,2r and 21,-4.
So add 7r+2r=9r and 21-4=17.
The final solution should be...
9r+17
