removing the absolute value symbol gives 1<=x-2<=3 and 1<=2-x<=3
1<=x-2<=3 adding 2 gives 3<=x<=5
1<=2-x<=3 subtracting 2 gives -1<=-x<=1 ... multiplying by -1 gives 1>=x>=-1
