Question 100573: Rewrite each equation as a function of x.
-3x +4y = 11
I do not understand how to draw/make a graph in Word at all, if someone could please help me with this problem I would much appriciate it. Can anyone help me graph the problem below????
graph the functions
f(x)= -2x - 5

You can put this solution on YOUR website! Rewrite each equation as a function of x.
:
-3x +4y = 11
:
Generally we can say function of x, f(x) = y
:
We want to perform the necessary algebra operations that will give y on the left
with a coefficient of 1; 1y or just written as "y"
:
-3x + 4y = 11
add 3x to both sides:
+3x - 3x + 4y = + 3x + 11
Therefore:
4y = 3x + 11
Divide both sides by 4, this gives y a coefficient of 1
y = x +
which is:
f(x) = x +

:
graph the functions
f(x)= -2x - 5
As I said, f(x) = y, therefore
y = -2x - 5
:
Since this is a linear equation, two points are sufficient, however to show you
how to graph on paper, I will give you 4 points.
:
Choose some values for x, say -3 to +3. Substitute for x and find y
y = -2x - 5
If x = -3
y = -2(-3) - 5
y = +6 - 5
y = +1
:
Put in the chart:
x | y
-------
-3 | +1
:
Then x = -1
y = -2(-1) - 5
y = +2 - 5
y = -3
:
Add to the chart:
x | y
-------
-3 | +1
-1 | -3
:
x = +1
y = -2(1) - 5
y = -2 - 5
y = -7
:
Add to the chart
x | y
-------
-3 | +1
-1 | -3
+1 | -7
:
One more, x = +3
y = -2)2) - 5
y = -4 -5
y = -9
:
x | y
-------
-3 | +1
-1 | -3
+1 | -7
+2 | -9
:
If you plot these points on normal graph paper, it should look like this
