Make the paperback represent 'x'
Hard cover = 289 + x
Total pages = x + x + 289
1691 = x + x + 289
Collect like terms
x + x = 1691 - 289
2x = 1402
x = 1402/2
x = 701
Paperback copy had 701 pages
Hard back copy had 990 pages
