You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Since the hare travels three times as fast, he will cover three times the distance in the same amount of time.
Call the distance the turtle covers, x.
Then the hare covers 3x.
Together that is 96 miles.
so x + 3x = 96
4x = 96
x = 24
3x = 72 miles

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Let +d+ = distance in miles the hare has to
travel until meeting the tortoise
+96+-+d+ = distance the tortoise travels
until meeting the hare
Let +t+ = time in hrs
---------------------
Hare's equation:
(1) +d+=+9t+
Tortoise's equation:
(2) +96+-+d+=+3t+
---------------------
By substitution:
(2) +96+-+9t+=+3t+
(2) +12t+=+96+
(2) +t+=+8+
--------------
(1) +d+=+9t+
(1) +d+=+9%2A8+
(1) +d+=+72+
The Hare travels 72 mi until it meets the tortoise
check:
(2) +96+-+d+=+3t+
(2) +96+-+d+=+3%2A8+
(2) +96+-+d+=+24+
and
+72+%2B+24+=+96+
+96+=+96+
OK
