A father is three times as old as his son.
F = 3S....(1)
Six years ago he was five times as old as his son.
F - 6 = 5(S - 6)......(2)
Replace F in Equation(2) with 3s from
Equation (1)
3S - 6 = 5(S - 6)
3S - 6 = 5S - 30
Collect like terms:
3S - 5S = -30 + 6
-2S = -24
2S = 24
S = 12
Son is currently 12 years old.
Father is currently 36 years old.
