Question 1001905: I am a three digit number. My tens digit is 5 more than my ones digit. My hundreds digit is eight less than my tens. What number am I? Answer by ptaylor(2198) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! xyz=three digit number
Let z=one's digit
Then z+5=ten's digit
And hundred's digit=(z+5)-8=z-3
soooo
z=z----------------eq1
z+5=y--------------eq2
z-3=x--------------eq3
subtract eq3 from eq2
and we get y-x=8
The main issue with this problem is the fact that we have two useful equations and three unknowns but this does not stop us from solving the problem because we know that each digit has to be a whole number between 0 and 9.
So when we examine the equation (y-x=8), we see that y has to equal 9 and x has to equal 1---no other digits will work:).
That means from eq2 or eq3 that z=4
So the number is 194
CK
the 1's digit is 4
then z+5=4+5=9 the 10's digit
And Z-3=4-3=1 the 100's digit
Hope this helps---ptaylor
