Maria gives x so she will have 20-x.
Haley gets the money so she will have 24+x.
We need to know what x is so that
24+x = 3(20-x)
Now solve this.
24+x = 60-3x
Now add 3x to both sides and get
24+4x = 60
Now subtract 24 from both sides and get
4x = 36
Now divide by 4 and get
x = $9
