Question 1000302: A bag contains dimes and quarters, a total of 40 coins. The value of coins is 7.15. How many dimes are there?

Answer by algebrahouse.com(1659) About Me  (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x = number of dimes
40 - x = number of quarters {there are 40 total coins in the bag}

10x + 25(40 - x) = 715 {number of coins times value of coin equals total value}
10x + 1000 - 25x = 715 {used distributive property}
-15x + 1000 = 715 {combined like terms}
-15x = -285 {subtracted 1000 from each side}
x = 19 {divided each side by -15}

There are 19 dimes.
