Question 696067: *(I don't understand why 2 in the explenation of the solution?)
If fencing costs $9.00 per yard, what would be the total cost of the fencing needed to enclose a rectangular area that measures 46 feet by 34 feet?
A.$34
B.$46
c.$160
D.$480
The correct answer is D. The perimeter is 2 times the width plus 2 times the length, or (2 × 46) + (2 × 34) = 160 feet. If the cost is $9.00 per yard, it would be $9 ÷ 3, or $3.00 per foot (1 yard is equal to 3 feet). The total cost is 160 ft × $3 per foot = $480.

You can put this solution on YOUR website! With any rectangle, there are 4 sides where the opposite sides are equal. So instead of saying
Perimeter = Length + Length + Width + Width
You can say
Perimeter = 2*Length + 2*Width
So that's where the '2's come from
