Question 190298: There is a freight train that travels 30 mph. An express train travels 55 mph. The freight train is 300 miles ahead of the express train. How long will it take for the express train to overtake the freight train?
I found out that 25x=9000 is the equation, and I see how those numbers were gotten. 55-30 is 25 and 300 times 30 is 9000 but I do not understand how 25 helps or what it stands for and what this equation is representing. Thanks for your help.

Question 190828: A cyclist bikes at a constant speed for 17 miles. He then returns home at the same speed but takes a different route. His return trip takes one hour longer and is 22 miles. Find his speed.
I was trying to do this problem this way:
Distance
Rate
Time = Distance/Rate
cyclist travels away from home
17
x = speed?
17/x
cyclist returns home different route
22
x + 1
22/x+1
I know this is not correct and that I have to find the average rate. I also don't know the time.
Thank you in advance!

Question 191981: Cross-country cycling. Erin was traveling across the
desert on her bicycle. Before lunch she traveled 60 miles
(mi); after lunch she traveled 46 mi. She put in 1 hour
more after lunch than before lunch, but her speed was
4 mph slower than before. What was her speed before
lunch and after lunch?
I tried solving this problem by using the d=r(t) equation.
x=rate y=time
before lunch= 60/x=y
after lunch= 48/x-4=y+1
so I substituted 60/x for y
46/x-4=60/x +1
46x=60(x-4) +x(x-4)
46x= 60x-240+x^2-4x
46x=x^2+56x-240
0=x^2+10x-240
I plug this into the quadratic formula, and it doesn't work, any suggestions?
