Question 178270: My question is how to solve this problem.
Jeff starts driving at 65mph from the same point that Lauren starts driving at 40mph. They drive in opposite directions , and Lauren has a half-hour head start. How long will they be able to talk on their cell phones that have a 480-mile range?
I tried to work it using the D=R*T
65x+40(x+1)=480
65x+40x+40=480
105x+40=480
-40 -40
105x=440
and the answer I got was 4 4/21 but that is not one of the options.
The options are: 4 8/21
4 17/30
4 16/21
4 4/7

Question 178839: The Cape Cod canal is 11 miles long. A passenger boat goes from New York to Boston, via the canal and ocean, in 15 1/3 hours, while a freighter makes the same trip in 30 hours. On the ocean the passenger boat averages 18mph, while the freighter averages half that rate. Inside the canal the freighter's rate was 2/3 that of the passenger boat. How far from New York is Boston, via the canal and ocean? (Hint: Use a table for the canal to obtain information used in the second table for the ocean.)
Using the Rate, Time, Distance table in my book we came up with x=8 1/4 or x=33/4. When I enter 33/4 into the equation I get 11 over 33 over 4. I am not sure how to work a fraction like this. Please help.
