Question 817067: One plane is traveling 3 times as fast as the second plane. After 4 hours they are 736 miles apart. How fast is each plane traveling? Answer by josgarithmetic(39617) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Rates of each plane are r and 3r.
If we do not know which direction each plane is taking then we do not really fast is each nor can we calculate; but assuming they travel is opposite directions, the the sum of their distances from starting point would be 736 miles.
......
If you understand this equation, then you understand most of the solution process. Just solve for r.
----------------------
Rate*Time=Distance.
Rate*Time for one plane plus Rate*Time for the other plane, gives the distance traveled or distance apart they are from starting point.
