You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Two trains leave the train station traveling the same rate of speed.
The southbound train reaches its destination in 1.5 hours.
The northbound train reaches its destination in 2 hours.
How fast were the trains traveling if their destinations are 200 miles apart?
:
Let s = the speed of the trains
:
Write a distance equation, dist = time * speed
:
First train dist + 2nd train dist = 200 mi
1.5s + 2s = 200
3.5s = 200
s = 200/3.5
s = 57.14 mph is their speed
:
:
See if that checks out, find the dist each traveled
1.5(57.14) = 85.7 mi
2.0(57.14) = 114.3 mi
---------------------
total dist: 200 mi
