Question 766185: "A car speeds up from 40km/h to 55km/h to overtake a truck. If tthis requires 15s, what is the acceleration and distance traveled by the car?" HELP ME PLEASE

=====================================================================
acceleration is measured in meters per second per second
acceleration = change of velocity / time taken
change in velocity is 55 - 40 = 15 kilometers per hour = 15 / 3600 = .004 km / sec = .004 km/sec * 1000 meters/km = 4 meters /sec/sec
time taken is 15 seconds
acceleration = 4 / 15 = .27 meters per second / second
=======================================================================
distance traveled = initial velocity * time + (acceleration * time^2 / 2)
distance traveled = 40 * 15 + (.27 * 15^2 / 2)
note here convert 40 km /hr to 40/3600 = .01 km/sec and 1000 meters = 1km
distance traveled = (10 meters per second * 15) + 30.38 = 180.38 meters
