Question 71139: The Diameter of the Earth is approximately 7,920 miles. Given that the circumference of a circle is ? times it's diameter, which statement best describes the length of a trip from Washington to Madagascar that is approximately 8,600 iles long?
0 1/4 of the circumference of the Earth
0 3/10ths of the circumference of the Earth
0 1/3 of the circumference of the Earth.
0 1/2 of the circumference of the Earth

my answer is 1/3rd of the Earth, however I would like verification of this.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
First, the circumference of the earth, using your value of the diameter, 7,920 miles, would be:
C+=+%28pi%29D
C+=+3.14%287920%29
C+=+24869miles.
The distance from Washington to Madagascar is 8,600 miles.
Divide 8,600 miles by 24,869 miles.
8600%2F24869+=+0.3458 this is very close to 0.333... and this = 1/3
So, the distance for Wahington to Madagascar would be approximately 1/3 the earth's circumference.
