Question 540712: paddling with a current a canoeist can travel 48 miles in 3 hours. against the current he takes 4 hours to travel the same distance. find the rate of the canoeist in still water and the rate of the current Found 2 solutions by mananth, Alan3354:Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! Canoe speed =x mph
current speed =y mph
against current , x-y 4 hours
with current , x+y 3 hours
Distance = same= 48 miles
t=d/r
Against current
48 / ( x - y )= 4.00
4 ( x - y ) = 48.00
4 x -4 y = 48 ....................1
With current
48 / ( x + y )= 3.00
3.00 ( x + y ) = 48
3.00 x + 3.00 y = 48 ...............2
Multiply (1) by 3.00
Multiply (2) by 4.00
we get
12 x + -12 y = 144
12 x + 12 y = 192
24 x = 336
/ 24
x = 14 mph
plug value of x in (1)
4 x -4 y = 48
56 -4 y = 48
-4 y = 48 -56
-4 y = -8
y = 2 mph
Canoe 14 mph
current 2 mph
You can put this solution on YOUR website! paddling with a current a canoeist can travel 48 miles in 3 hours. against the current he takes 4 hours to travel the same distance. find the rate of the canoeist in still water and the rate of the current
--------
48/3 = 16 mi/hr
48/4 = 12 mi/hr
The canoe's speed is the average = (16+12)/2 = 14 mi/hr
The current is the difference = 16 - 14 = 2 mi/hr
