Question 53489: Hi, I am having trouble with this problem because it does not give the distance between the two locations; but, the hint for the problem is that you don't need to know that distance to solve it. Thanks.
Q: Two cars are approaching one another, one from Los Angeles, at 80mph, and the other from Palm Springs at 60mph. How far apart are they 1 hour before they meet? -Hint- You don't need to know the distance from Loas Angeles to Palm Springs!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Well, if the two cars have one hour before they meet, you need to ask yourself..."How far will each car travel in one hour at their present speed?"
The L. A. car is traveling at 80 mph so it will go 80 miles in one hour.
The Palm Springs car is traveling at 60 mph so it will go 60 miles in one hour.
Add the two distances together...80 miles + 60 miles = 140 miles.
So the two cars will be 140 miles apart 1 hour before they meet.
Does this make sense?
