Two automobiles start together at the same place and travel along the same route.the first averages 40 miles per hour,the second 55 miles per hour.how many miles further along the route is the second auto at the end of five hours?
...
difference in average speed = 55-40 = 15 mph
time = 5 hours
Distance = Time * speed
Distance apart = 5*15 = 75 miles

Hello,
One way to figure this out is multiply both by 5 hours which gives us:
200 miles traveled by the 40 mph car
275 miles traveled by the 55 mph car
So we can see the second auto is 75 miles further.
Make sense?
