At 7:00 a.m. a plane left Houston for Detroit, 1750 miles away, flying at 400 mph. At 8:30 a.m. a plane left Detroit for Houston at 500 mph. At what time did they pass each other?

1750=400T+500(T-1.5)
1750=400T+500T-750
1750=900T-750
900T=1750+750
900T=2500
T=2500/900
T=2.78 HOURS AFTER THE 400 MPH. PLANE LEAVES THEY WILL MEET.
2.78=2:47 HOURS.
7:00+2:47=9:47 THEY WILL MEET.

At 7:00 a.m. a plane left Houston for Detroit, 1750 miles away, flying at 400 mph.
At 8:30 a.m. a plane left Detroit for Houston at 500 mph.
At what time did they pass each other?
:
Let t = travel time of the Detroit plane
then
(t+1.5) = travel time of the Houston plane
:
When they meet, their travel distances will total 1750 mi
Write a distance equation; dist = speed/time
:
400(t+1.5) + 500t = 1750
400t + 600 + 500t = 1750
400t + 500t = 1750 - 600
900t = 1150
t =
t = 1.278 hrs which is: 1 + .278(60) ~ 1:17 (1 hr 17 min)

8:30 + 1:17 = 9:47 am; the time they meet

Check solution, find the distance of each
400 * (1.278 + 1.5) = 1111.2 mi
500 * 1.278 = 639 mi
