One train from Chicago traveling toward Washington D.C. at the rate of 55 mph. Another train starting at the same time leaves Washington D.C. for Chicago traveling at the rate of 45 mph. If the distance between the two cities is 900 miles, how long will it be before the trains pass each other?

Since they are going toward each other you must add the rates.
rate * time = distance
The instant the sum of their distances reaches 900 mi they are passing each other. They will have been going the same amount of time when they pass.
rt+rt=900
55t+45t=900
100t=900
t=9 hrs
