Question 367670: A small motor on a fishing boat can move the boat 6mph in calm water. When trolling in a river, the amount of time it takes to travel 12 mi. against the river's current is the same as the time it takes to travel 24 mi. with the current. Find the rate of the current.

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

Hi,
Let x represent the rate of the current
d = r*t Or t = d/r
%2812mi%2F%286mph-x%29%29+=+%2824mi%2F%286mph%2Bx%29%29
cross multiply
24*(6-x) =12*(6+x)
12*6 = 36x
2mph = x, the rate of the current
checking our answer
12mi/4mph = 24mi/8mph = 3 hr
